For those too lazy, here is an excerpt from the piece by Frank Deford titled "The Joy of Being At The Game: Priceless?"

"The greatest miscalculation in sports history was that if you put a game on television for free, consumers, not being idiots, would choose free. Instead, seeing a game on television made people want to come out and pay to be part of the action themselves.

There are, I believe, a couple other reasons why the stadiums and arenas are filled.

First, there's the Grateful Dead hypothesis. When all the other music geniuses were trying to make money off records and CDs, the Dead said, "Come on out and see us live and, it's OK, go ahead, tape us making music."

Like that, in an iPod world increasingly individualized, sports means getting together and sharing. Remember, Katie Casey didn't just say, "Take me out to the ballgame." Just as important was: "Take me out with the crowd." Sports fans are — well, they're athletic Deadheads."

Agreed. However it seems kind of ironic that we are discussing this at a website that allows us to do the opposite of what the Grateful Dead Hypothesis is. Because of what the band allowed, we can now sit in front of our computers and experience the music without being there. I for one am not complaining.

Define irony: listening to a song by a band that died in a plane wreck while crashing yourself.

Crappy movie, but LOVE Steve Buscemi.

Well that makes a lot more sense than defining it as a black fly in your chardonnay. wtf? I define that as a happy black fly.

I define that as ebony and ivory (yuck...wretch)...black fly and white wine and all...too obvious?

Actually it is one of the non-ironic things in the song Ironic by Alanis Morrissette. Here is a link with more info. I considered linking the video for the song but decided that could result in a lifetime ban from this place.

However the lazy do not get to hear a little excerpt of NFA/GDTRFB at the end of the piece. Nice touch.

Just like the folks who did not watch the intro piece to the Olympics opening ceremony missed Chinacat playing in the background.
